'All Tomorrow's Futures' - Linen Mix Fabric - Seaweed Green - Sample

£5.00

At first glance, 'All Tomorrow's Futures' is a joyful and rapidly flowing depiction of the natural world. Shoals of fish dart across this beautiful, highly-textured fabric, and monkeys swing from tree to tree among amid exotic blooms. But upon closer inspection, all is not as it seems within this intricate design.

Hidden within the hand-carved lino cut pattern is a subtle message about humankind's impact on the planet. Flocks of swallows morph into aeroplanes and factory fumes mingle with skulls and snakes. Yorkshire artist and illustrator Alexis Snell worked with us to create this exuberant yet thought-provoking design to explore the juxtaposition between the natural and industrial worlds.

Alexis sketched out the original design for 'All Tomorrow's Futures' in pencil before hand carving it onto a lino block and printing it by hand. This pattern was then screen printed at our heritage mill in Cumbria onto a bespoke cotton-linen fabric with a handcrafted, bouclé-like feel.

"I really liked the idea of translating one of my designs into a different medium," says Alexis, whose children's book The Bear in the Starswas the starting point for 'All Tomorrow's Futures'. "We wanted to create a modern version of the Willow Pattern in which the design tells a story. As an artist, I can't make that much difference to climate change, but what I can do is create images that make people think about what's happening to our planet. The name refers to the fact that the future of our planet could go in two different ways. We've got to act now to prevent disaster."

'All Tomorrow's Futures' is available in three monochrome colourways, reflecting the simplicity of the design's original lino cut. Lobster orange is a bold crimson which gives a vivid pop of colour against its unbleached linen background.

The design lends itself perfectly to curtains, blinds, upholstery and cushions. Use it to inject vibrant colour into a neutral scheme or to add another layer of pattern in a maximalist interior. 'All Tomorrow's Futures' would also be the perfect partner for hospitality settings which place a particular emphasis on sustainability.
