J. Alex Swift Limited
J. Alex Swift Ltd was established in 1895 by John Alexander Swift in the Leicestershire village of Hathern where it remains today. The company is now being managed by the 4th generation of the Swift family. With 125 years of experience comes incomparable knowledge and expertise. There is a lot of history between the factory walls, and while we value our heritage and traditions, we are constantly innovating and developing new products. This is how we remained a respected manufacturer in the British hosiery industry for so long.
For over a century we sold solely wholesale. Here we are stepping into new territory, offering our socks direct to you. A lot has happened over the decades, but some things haven’t changed: the pride we take in our work, the quality of our products and the satisfaction of our customers.
We have concentrated on the use of traditional double cylinder machinery to produce quality socks. We also have a small plant of single-cylinder machines for intarsia and lightweight items. Some of our knitting machines have been in operation since the 1950s while others are of the latest generation using computer control for all aspects of knitting.
Our range of products has evolved over the years to reflect the changing UK sock market. We are delighted to be the leading UK manufacturer of mohair and alpaca socks.

Our Story
British. Not Brit-ish. Meeting the H+S Standard.
All our partners agree to adhere to and uphold these standards for all products. If a product doesn’t meet the Standard, it’s not listed. Simple.
Ethical
We’re proud to uphold the reputation for quality and ethical standards that ‘British Made’ implies.
Sustainable
We get really excited when our makers have sustainability at their heart. We love things that are made to last.
Support local
We are here to support our community. We reinvest back into the business so we can assist collaborations and keep telling our maker’s stories.
