Working under the brand Alistair R Alistair’s stone carving and jewellery making studio is based in the heart of the Co Down countryside. Through his emphasis on simple, timeless design he handcrafts uniquely attractive pieces inspired by the beautiful colours of semi-precious stone. Working primarily from rough and unworked stone obtained from sustainable sources around the world as well as locally found material his pieces are handmade in his stone carving and jewellery making workshop – each aiming to capture the alchemy and unique character of the natural material.
Alistair founded his studio in 2009 - inspired by a set of 1920’s moonstone and gold cufflinks and dress studs, a family heirloom of timeless quality, and a lifelong interest in the natural world and geology – seeds sown from his upbringing in the West Country. Leaving the corporate world behind he trained in stone carving (lapidary) under the tutelege of Roger Dunkin in London and silversmithing, launching initially with a range of cufflinks. It was not long before he was asked to incorporate his designs into necklaces and other jewellery, and so the range grew, always reflecting his passion for natural materials, the desire for simple, striking and uncluttered design – and belief that such design is embued with the quality of permanence. Timeless designs that endure rather than ones driven by fashion which are transient and fade.
Offering gold and silver jewellery across a broad price range Alistair incorporates into a small range of one-of luxury pieces work of the world-renowned stone carver and friend, Dieter Lorenz. He has exhibited at premier events in the London and Dublin as well as local village and charity shows closer to home. A member of the Crafts Council of Ireland and Craft NI Alistair was selected in 2021 to be part of the Design Ireland programme.
