Hope and Story: What we stand for
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. It's a clichéd quote but it rings true, particularly when shopping online. How many times have you purchased an item under false pretences, only to be disappointed after the grand un-boxing to discover it's not what you hoped for and were led to believe it would be?
The rise of the digital marketplace has brought with it so many positives benefits, namely convenience. Everything under the sun is now available within 24 hours with just the click of a button. But the emergence of online juggernauts such as Amazon and eBay does come at a cost. How do independent brands from the UK make themselves seen amongst a sea of competition from around the world? How can we be sure that what we are buying has been made ethically? How do we know where it has come from? Are we supporting the local economy?
Hope and Story is an online destination for conscious consumers looking for British Made products and brands with ethics, sustainability and quality at their heart. However, we exist to be more than just a marketplace. Before we bit-the-bullet and committed to making this business happen, we spent a long time together (well, over Zoom) talking about what really matters to us, what we stand for, and how we want people to feel about us. Here's the 5 values we pledge to always uphold:
We are totally open and transparent in all our dealings with both Partners and consumers.
We are open for business, new ideas and opportunities that will help our partners, industry and the British economy.
We’re proud of our makers and proud to uphold the reputation for quality that ‘British Made’ implies.
We get really excited when our makers have sustainability at their heart. We love things that are made to last.
We are here to support our community. We reinvest back into the business so we can assist collaborations and keep telling our makers' stories.
British. Not Brit-ish.
Meeting the H+S Standard.
When you shop on Hope and Story you can be safe in the knowledge that what you buy has been made sustainably, right here in Blighty. You won't just be buying a pair of socks, you'll be supporting Max up in Scotland who has handmade that pair of socks from Merino Wool sourced from sheep on his neighbouring farm. You'll know that because we will proudly be sharing his story.
All our partners agree to adhere to and uphold these standards for all products. If a product doesn’t meet the Standard, it’s not listed. Simple.
Made in Britain: our definition.
If the items are predominantly treated or manufactured in the UK, or the majority of their sustainable core materials originate from here, they meet the H+S standard.
