Meet The Maker: Soma Sportswear
Welcome to Hope and Story's Meet the Maker Series, where we chat with some of the people behind our favourite independent British brands.
I chatted with the wonderful Chris frequently and got to know a little bit more about his company, Soma Sportswear. I managed to drag him away from doing what they love for half an hour to answer my questions on product making, sustainability, their progression, surviving a pandemic, and lots more...
For anyone who is not familiar with your brand, tell us a little bit about Soma Sportswear?
Where did the name ‘Soma Sportswear’ come from?
Can you talk us through what happens on your end? I understand that your products are made with tree fibers and incorporate high-quality silver yarn, can you tell us more about this?
Every step of our supply chain has been designed to be as sustainable as possible.
First step: Our TENCEL™ Modal fibres are manufactured from renewable raw beech tree wood, sourced from a sustainable forest in Europe.
The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification confirms that TENCEL™ Modal fibres have been tested for numerous regulated and non-regulated harmful substances.
Second step: We then infuse the TENCEL™ Modal fibres with 99% pure silver which makes up the remaining 8% of our fabric, nature’s anti-odour and anti-bacterial secret weapon.
Third step: We then ensure our manufacturing is based locally in London to keep a lid on carbon emissions as well as guaranteeing a safe and ethical working environment for our team.
Fourth step: A zero waste strategy is adopted with our fabric. All wastage fabric is used to make face masks and boxing hand wraps with any scrap pieces going towards recycled carpets.
Fifth step: Our packaging keeps waste to a minimum. It’s 100% recyclable. 100% carbon negative. And 100% free from unnecessary gimmicks, hence the simplicity.
Sixth step: To complete the sustainable supply chain journey we give back to Mother Nature - who has provided us with this amazing fabric - by planting two trees per product purchased. This is through our partnership with One Tree Planted.
Whereabouts in Britain are your products made? How important is it for you that your products are manufactured here in Britain?
When was Soma Sportswear born? And how has it progressed from then to now?
What does the future hold for Soma Sportswear?
Our mission is Global reforestation through slow fashion. Fast fashion is the third biggest polluter worldwide, we want to change that by educating our audience to buy less but better quality, leaving us with less clothes in landfill as a result of purchasing products that have a longer life cycle.
